Canseco wants to fight A-Rod
Former baseball player and current celebrity boxer Jose Canseco said he would like to fight Yankees star Alex Rodriguez. Speaking Thursday at a weigh-in for his upcoming fight in Massachusetts, Canseco was asked which current player he most would like to box? His response: "Who I would love to fight the most, if I could pick a baseball player? Alex Rodriguez, get your [butt] in the ring, I'll beat you to a pulp. That lying little idiot, I'd like to get him in the ring."

Can Red Sox re-sign Bay?
Jason Bay has led the Red Sox in home runs and RBI while finishing second in runs scored and OPS. How much is he worth on the open market? Will the Red Sox be willing to pay it given the manner in which they have approached free agency during the last seven years? Part of the problem is that the Sox don't appear to have any better options to replace him, be it through trade or free agency. They don't have a hitter like him ready in their minor league system. Matt Holliday would cost at least as much or more, and his brief stint in the AL (let alone Boston) left a great deal to be desired. A trade would require further forfeiture of young talent from a Sox system that has hit somewhat of a developmental hole, particularly after a flurry of necessary, in-season trades this year. The bottom line is that the Red Sox seem backed into a corner here.

Brewers clearing salary space for pitching
The Milwaukee Brewers did more Friday than trade one player for another. In sending shortstop J.J. Hardy to the Minnesota Twins for centerfielder Carlos Gomez, the Brewers began remaking their roster as well as clearing salary space to pursue much-needed pitching.

Yankees to pass on free agents?
The Yankees found $181 million lying around last offseason, and made a late, victorious bid to corral Mark Teixeira, so never say never when it comes to the Yankees and spending. But the initial read as the winter bazaar opens is that the Yankees do not intend to make a play for the three biggest free agents: Jason Bay, Matt Holliday and John Lackey. This is not about need, because corner outfield and starting pitcher are priorities to fortify what is now a champion. But based on conversations with multiple Yankees officials, I sense that financially and philosophically the Yankees will not big-game hunt in free agency.
