Avery getting less ice time
If Dion Phaneuf wants to go looking for Sean Avery on the ice tonight, he had better be alert, with the winger unaccountably banished by coach John Tortorella to the bottom of the food chain on the Rangers' three-game western tour that concludes against the Flames. "It's not just about Sean. Other guys are playing well," the coach said yesterday morning after giving Avery eight shifts for a total of 5:56 of ice in Thursday's 4-2 victory in Edmonton. "There's accountability involved here."

Wilson's rant spurs Leafs to win
Ron Wilson and his coaching staff had seen enough. So after an opening 20 minutes in which his team had dug itself into yet another 2-0 hole against the struggling Carolina Hurricanes, he let them have it in the intermission. "They've got to get mad at some point," Wilson said. "I said to the team: 'We've only got one win in 13 games, when's somebody going to get upset here?' " The answer came in the next 12 minutes and 37 seconds, the time it took the Leafs to even the score and get them on the way to win No. 2 on the season.

Or will he sit it out, part of his lingering discontent with the NHL over how shabbily he was treated during the Phoenix Coyotes bankruptcy hearings by the league he helped put on the map in the first place?

The Vancouver Canucks are interested in signing the former winner of the Hart Memorial Trophy if he's up to NHL snuff, general manager Mike Gillis confirmed yesterday. Vancouver has six people watching Forsberg at the Karjala Cup tournament in Finland, according to the Team 1040 AM.
