Celtics free agent guard Stephon Marbury said to The Globe early Friday morning that he doesn't expect to be returning to Boston after receiving a disappointing one-year contract paying $1.3 million using the veteran's minimum. Marbury said his representative, National Basketball Players Association deputy counsel Hal Biagas, called to tell him about the Celtics offer on Thursday night. The 32-year-old said three other teams, which he would not disclose, are currently interested.

This is just going to open up a can......

Maybe he can tell them they won't win another championship, unless they spend the money on the best point guard in the league. He is becoming more irrelevant every day.

What did he expect to get offered after his performance last season? Just yesterday he described himself as "mentally damaged''.

July 3, 2009  08:17 AM ET

He played like he should get the veteran minimum, but he'll probably be better next year by playing the whole season somewhere.

July 3, 2009  08:26 AM ET

This Marbury cat needs a reality check... with 4 points and 3 TURNOVERS and poor defense against Rafer Allston in the elmination game against Orlando he basically blew Boston's season. The 1.3 mil is obviously an insult and the polite way of telling him to get lost...

But I don't understand why he'd lie about three teams being interested in him... is he talking basketball or something else?

July 3, 2009  08:32 AM ET

I wonder which 3 D league teams r trying 2 sign him?

July 3, 2009  08:45 AM ET

I guess that's what they thought he was worth..how much they needed him..Probably won't get offered any more than that by any winning team..

July 3, 2009  09:46 AM ET

Disappointed? What the F! He's #17 in Fortunate 50's America's Richest athletes. Way ahead of Pierce, Melo, Rashard and Amare.

Shanghai Sharks, Austin Toros, Benetton Treviso.

Marbury is doing the right thing for him...He gave it a go-he just couldnt be consistent-all the Celtics wanted from him was the old Stephon and he couldn't give it to us. Thanks for coming.

July 3, 2009  10:57 AM ET

those three teams are in Euro league probably but there are some teams that could use his skills, but his problems are a little hard to overlook.

lol....
thanks I needed a laugh

The Celtics offer is about what he deserves after his play during the playoffs. He's either great or horrible at any given moments. I think the Celts made the offer in hopes he'd pass.

July 3, 2009  11:52 AM ET

Hope the Cavs sign him. DON'T want to see Cleveland win it all next season.

July 3, 2009  12:32 PM ET

What a loser.....

July 3, 2009  12:33 PM ET

He better make good on his word a few years back about playing in Italy.

July 3, 2009  01:02 PM ET

He can still play. Could work in the right situation. I'd stay with the Celtics for a chance at a ring rather than go to a team that's paying more money but will be in the basement. It is a business but he's made a ton of money already.

July 3, 2009  01:13 PM ET

Mnn I hope Lakers sign in him. For free..Infact celts, cavs, spurs should all chip in, so lakers can sign him.

welcome to the boards.....
unfortunatley basically every comment you've made today on these
