The saga surrounding Andrei Arshavin's potential move to one of Europe's major leagues has taken another twist after the Russia star claimed it would be "a dream" to join Bayern Munich. The 27-year-old midfielder has already seen moves to England and Spain fall through after his current club, Zenit St. Petersburg, refused to budge on their $38 million asking price following his starring role in Euro 2008. Arshavin has publicly criticised the Russian club for their unrealistic valuation, but has welcomed reports that Bayern might be interested in signing him when the transfer window reopens in January. "I don't want to play for Zenit any more," he told German media. "Playing for Bayern is a dream."

Makes things a bit more interesting regarding LD, doesn't it?

November 19, 2008  01:05 PM ET

Notice he didn't say whether it was a good or bad dream.

November 19, 2008  01:12 PM ET

Unreal. Where wouldn't Arshavin want to play?
Man United would "be a dream."
Arsenal...etc.
Real Madrid, Barcelona...

All Arshavin is doing is making sure he can get out of Zenit...so he will praise as many top clubs in Europe so that Zenit gets an offer they find acceptable and let him move. He has said over and over how unhappy he is that the club wouldn't let him move over the summer.
Pure marketing tactic to make sure a big club comes in with the appropriate euros to make the transfer.

It sure does, but I don't now that Bayern need him, where does he fit in? I see LD there more than Arshavin because of the whole Klinsmann connection. Not to mention he has been trying out/training with the team already and they can see if he has anything to offer them. I think now Madrid will pony up any amount of money for him and he might be better suited there than Crespo and he is much younger.

I hope he finally gets his wish and gets transfered to one of the big leagues/ big teams, he was incredible to watch at the Euro.

This Arshavin transfer saga has been a world of trouble. He should have joined Arsenal when he had the chance but he wanted the big time money. I completely understand he doesnt want to play for Zenit anymore, but he has a contract. Too much today in club football, players sign long-term contracts and back out after two years. I feel for Arshavin, and it would be nice to see him in the EPL or another top Euro league.

Bottom line: He should honor his contract.

I've got to beg to differ, Barca. Arshavin has already performed, and performed brilliantly on the biggest European stage. He's a known quantity. Donovan has been exceptional at times domestically and internationally, but hugely inconsistent.

If anything, Bayern might pass on Arshavin due to Zenit's asking price, which bodes well for Donovan. I certainly don't see Garber peddling Donovan for the same kind of money, that is, if Garber decides to peddle him at all.

Arshavin + Ribery = Fun Football

November 19, 2008  02:07 PM ET

BGB. I dont think BMQUC was saying LD is better than Arshavin because it's pretty clear that that is not the case. I have to agree with Barca that as LD is already trying out, there is more weight behind his move than a rumor only on potentioal early stage interest for Arshavin,

in my mind, Arshaven is being served to Real Madrid on a silver platter - he wants to leave, club wants to sell - but at the end of the day RM has do decide whether or not the want to dole out 30-40 MM Euros on Arshavin. But I do see Arshavin in the Real Madrid white jerseys come January - they need him bad!

November 19, 2008  02:14 PM ET

I'll give the guy credit were it's due, he is good and he had a wonderful EURO 08, but one solid tourney shouldn't make him the apple of the eye for the biggest clubs in europe... if their front offices are worth lick, that is. $38 million is way too high a price. Plus, Bayern doesn't need another striker to sit there and be unhappy with lack of PT (no disrespect to Poldi, i love the guy, but they don't need to have one more). Madrid may look his way, but only because Calderon is a fool, they need a much younger talent to replace RvN for the year, and eventually for the ageless Raul should he ever decide to step down. Dudeman needs to suck it up and honor his contract ... and hope he gets along with his front office.

November 19, 2008  02:32 PM ET

Dihno's Dog--I wasn't talking about who was better than who, or who has more natural talent. If that were the discussion, I'd be the first to say that Donovan could hold his own and then some with just about any other player in the world. Anyone who follows the game seriously knows that Donovan is talented, wildly so.

I was specifically talking about performance. And I also have to disagree with CUtigers: I don't think there's any doubt that if a player shines, and shines brilliantly during the stretch of a WC, Euro Champ, or Champions' League run, that he then becomes the apple, peach, plum and watermelon of every big-money Euro club.

November 19, 2008  02:44 PM ET

Every day brings a new dream for Arshavin as long as he gets out of what he calls a nightmare at Zenit.

Bayern and Arshavin does make sense, but it wouldn't surprise me if Real Madrid sweeps in on him in January.

November 19, 2008  02:45 PM ET

Billy G, all i suggest is that consistency over a period of more that 6 months should be required of anybody who wants to play for the giants of Europe. right, wrong, or indifferent, the guy was relatively unknown to me. he had a great euro, yes, but he's already 27, where has he been for the past 7 years? before last year, in the league he has averaged less than 6 goals a season with Zenit. last season it was 10. as i said earlier, he is a fine player, he just needs to keep this current top level of play up for a while more.... and honor his contract the he willingly signed and agreed to.

November 19, 2008  02:51 PM ET

CUtigers,

The difference here is that you're talking about an ideal world where what "should" happen is more important. I'm talking about the actual world and nature of business where what "does" happen is what takes precedence.

In reality, big, monied Euro clubs go after anyone who does well in a single tournament of the same magnitude as a World Cup/Champions' League/ or European Championship. The proof of that is that we're discussing this phenomenon right now.

His relative age and resume are completely irrelevant and trumped by his magnificent showing this summer.

Yeah I wasn't talking about who has performed and consistency, I was simply stating that LD is there, he's got Klinsmann backing him and IMO has a better chance of getting picked up by Bayern than does Arshavin.

The simple fact is both players are playing great right now, but both have had times where they disappeared, although I think LD has been more consistent but playing in Europe is a whole different beast than MLS.

Personally I think Arshavin is throwing it out there because he wants out and he wants it bad, and i'd like to see him get a chance in a big club.

This is exactly true. He just wants out of Zenit. Basically his only caveat is that he goes to a Champions League bound team. Seems resonable. I doubt Bayern pays the 25 million euro for him. As much as I'd love to have him, Pavel P. as a striker from Zenit is much more probable.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Bayern take Arshavin. Remember they spent 80m last year on transfers with toni, ribs, and klose. It would also take a lot less convincing to take Arshavin than risk taking LD. One has already shown what he can do, and one has already ran away. Arshavin would play on the left side while ribs takes center, and schweini on the right, with vb or borowski and ze as holding midfielders. the back doesn't matter at this point. Every single Bayern player on defence is a national player or future national player

Arshavin may be dreaming of Bayern but an article on soccernet.com is saying that Real Madrid is leading the race to sign him.

I suppose that means that tomorrow's T&R will have something about that.

everyday real is rumored to be buying someone. Yet they ain't doin much

Im not surprised Real Madrid hasn't gotten anybody yet, seeing as how the transfer window is not open...
