Berbatov ready to quit

Dimitar Berbatov has emerged an early injury doubt for Manchester United's weekend trip to Aston Villa. The 27-year-old striker picked up a leg injury while featuring for Bulgaria in the international against Serbia last night and was replaced in the first half. So frustrated has been Berbatov with his criticism in his country for what the Bulgaria FA and coach feel stems from lack of desire on field, that the former Bayer Leverkusen star is ready to retire from international action.

This makes sense...Berbatov is a true mercenary player...(like Anelka) - so no wonder he is giving up on Bulgaria MNT. Money isn't good enough.

He better get healthy quick...the January transfer window is opening soon and Real Madrid is ready to splash some cash around...Berbatov might have his pen all warmed up and ready to sign.

Unfortunately, this happens between star players and their respective national teams. It's not uncommon for them to quit their national sides for a period of time only for them to come running back.

I suspect that's what Berbatov is going to do. Whine and throw a hissy fit, and then run back in a little while.

Not just a true mercenary player, but a true prima donna. He's seems always to be whining about something.

Kopper...normally I don't like to agree with Liverpool supporters (LOL) but...you're right about the prima donna.

Different note...being reported that Donovan is going to be loaned to Bayern.
Short term loan - January to March with potential for a long-term loan deal or transfer.

Now back to Berbatov.

Prima donna or drama queen? ManU fans correct me if I'm wrong but it seems that he hasn't proved his worth yet and sure wasn't worth all the drama. IMO Tevez should have received a contract and more PT than this clown.

November 20, 2008  11:25 AM ET

Off topic - Not sure if this is anywhere on CNN, but the German press is reporting that a contract has been finalized and Bayern will be loaning Landon Donovan out until Mid-March 2009. At that point Bayern would have the option to either send him back for the MLS season, loan him out longer, or purchase him. Will be interesting to see what he does next year. Now that he is a Bayern player, I suppose I must support him (initially).

He's had his moments but no he hasn't proven his worth. The thing about Berbatov is that he is the tall up top striker this team really needed. Rooney prefers playing in a more attacking midfield/center forward role and as much as I like Tevez he really isn't a target striker in Sir Alex's setup.

Berbatov made sense but his attitude isn't helping matters.

I thought that this guy was a class act. This would be a big blow for the Bulgarian side.

Yeah I guess I can see that but so far he just doesn't seem worth all the drama and I completely lose respect for players who refuse to play and represent their national side, that has got to be a disturbing trend of players who either don't represent or don't give 100% to their national side and Berbatov is quickly rising on that list.

Sometimes, I don't blame these guys. For these "smaller" countries (I mean that in a football context), they expect the world of their stars and think that they can single handedly bring them to a World Cup or Continental Cup. Fact is, these guys are stars on their club teams with a ton of support. They go and play for their national teams and its not of the same level. Roy Keane is a classic example, he brought his Man U mentality and attitude to the Irish team and the people who ran the Irish FA didn't share his desire to win and suceed. They had the "glad to be here" mentality in '02 when he walked out. I don't agree with walking out on your club on the eve of a major tournement, but, I do see his point (they finally got serious when they appointed Trap as coach). Alexander Hleb was another guy who'd get a ton of criticism from Belarus fans because he didn't seem like he was playing the same for the NT. It's not a one man game, Ryan Giggs could never get Wales to a Tournement, neither could George Weah

First... why would Berba leave for Madrid while they are in a mini-crisis after having just signed for United?... Not gonna happen. Second, Berba has had many moments this year and if anyone has been watching United in the Champions League, you'll see that. Also, I believe the main reason Rooney had that great stretch was because of the service Berba provides. We all know United havent played the best in the league, and this was understandable as Fergie has stated repeating in the Champions League is priority #1. Although I dont agree with any statements that Berba has not proven his worth; He has. However, I do agree that when players have these problems with intl coaches, it never really turns out well for either side.

This mofo's name sounds like a freaking rifle: Dimitar Bervatov. Awsome bro!

November 20, 2008  06:49 PM ET

dimitar berbatov whining and complaining , what else is new

November 21, 2008  09:40 AM ET

Agreed he's a whiny git, but 2 goals and 5 assists in 10 games is nothing to sneeze at. More importantly, he's scored 4 goals in Champs League and that's where the real money is. He's a true #9 which is not easy to find.

Tevez, in limited time, has only one goal in the Premiership.

The Bulgarians should let him go and focus on youth though. If he ain't happy (which seems to be often) he will poison the locker room. Let him go...he'll be whining to come back in no time.
